Getting started
01What is RunZone?
RunZone is a workout and Fitness app for iPhone and Apple Watch, with an iPad companion for reviewing your data. Record an outdoor run on iPhone for free. Premium turns your Watch into a real-time coach with live heart-rate zones, pace and distance goals, voice cues, auto-pause, and post-workout recovery context.
Five workout modes cover outdoor runs, treadmill sessions, heart-rate-focused cardio, walking, and hiking. Free records outdoor Run on iPhone. Premium adds Walking and Hiking on iPhone plus all five modes on Apple Watch.
Link to this answerWhich Apple Watch models are supported?
RunZone requires watchOS 26. It supports Apple Watch Series 6 or later, Apple Watch SE 2 or later, and every Apple Watch Ultra model. Layouts scale from the 40mm case up to the 49mm Ultra.
Always-On Display is supported and dims non-essential elements so your metrics stay visible.
See Apple’s watchOS compatibility list for the current device requirements.
Link to this answerDo I need an iPhone?
You can record outdoor runs with the iPhone app without an Apple Watch. To use RunZone on Apple Watch, you need a paired iPhone to install and set up the Watch app. With Premium, the Watch is fully standalone during workouts: GPS, HealthKit, heart-rate sensing, and Guidance all run on-device.
The iPhone app adds:
- Free outdoor Run recording, plus Premium Walking and Hiking recording and workout planning
- A current Workout Readiness summary, the three newest readable workouts in History, and basic route maps, with Premium timelines, full History, advanced route analysis, and detailed charts
- Live Activity controls on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island
- Per-workout Premium Guidance, device-wide Audio controls, HR-zone, Watch display, and workout-default settings
The iPad companion provides Fitness, History, and applicable app settings, but it does not start workouts.
Link to this answerDoes RunZone work offline?
Yes. Premium Apple Watch workouts can record without a network connection using GPS, heart-rate, altimeter, and voice guidance. Set up the required permissions and Premium access before heading out. Offline starts still depend on the Watch’s valid saved subscription status.
Recording and recovery run on the Watch. History and Fitness can use readable data already available on that device; a workout does not appear on another device until its data has reached it. Weather, purchases, and communication between iPhone and Watch still need their respective connections. Offline recording does not include offline maps.

02What is the difference between the five workout modes?
Each mode tunes GPS, pace, and auto-pause behavior to the activity:
- Run - outdoor running with GPS, distance, pace, and route tracking
- Indoor Run - treadmill runs, distance without GPS
- Mixed Cardio - heart-rate-focused, no distance or pace (great for interval classes or strength circuits)
- Walking - outdoor with GPS and pace
- Hiking - outdoor with GPS, distance, pace-goal support, and a longer auto-pause timeout suited to trail breaks
Free can record outdoor Run on iPhone. Premium adds Walking and Hiking recording on iPhone and all five modes on Apple Watch; Indoor Run and Mixed Cardio remain Watch-only. Premium can also enable or disable modes in Workout Defaults to keep the start screen focused.
Link to this answerHow are my heart-rate zones calculated?
RunZone uses the Karvonen (Heart Rate Reserve) method with five zones. The default maximum heart rate is age-derived when your date of birth is available.
Premium can read resting heart rate and recent peak heart rate from HealthKit, or use manual resting and maximum heart-rate overrides.
Link to this answerHow accurate is auto-pause?
Premium auto-pause detects sustained stops during workouts and can optionally pause running workouts when you drop to a walk. It combines step, pedestrian-activity, and recent GPS movement signals so a brief sensor gap does not immediately pause the session.
Run and Indoor Run support the optional pause-runs-when-walking behavior. Walking and Hiking use a more conservative stop timeout suited to trail breaks and errands.
It resumes automatically when you pick up the pace again. Mixed Cardio does not use distance, pace, or route tracking.
Link to this answerCan I listen to music while using voice announcements?
Yes. Voice announcements use the Watch audio session and duck music playback during each cue, then restore volume.
You can choose from installed voices grouped by Premium, Enhanced, or Standard quality when available, then adjust speech rate and volume. iPhone and Watch maintain separate voice installations. RunZone yields cleanly to Siri, calls, Maps, and other audio interruptions.
Link to this answerWhat are HRR1 and HRR2?
Heart Rate Recovery at 1 and 2 minutes describes the drop in heart rate from your workout peak at those intervals after finishing.
Premium offers a guided Apple Watch cooldown when your ending heart rate is elevated. With suitable readings, it shows HRR1 and HRR2 as recovery values, without a fitness grade. HRR1 can appear in workout History; HRR2 is live-only. If suitable readings are missing, the result stays unavailable.

Every new Apple Watch workout start requires Premium. RunZone supports several convenient start paths.
iPhone to Watch (recommended, Premium): Configure the mode, goals, and tracking options in the iPhone Workout tab. Hold to Start on iPhone. RunZone opens the Watch app with the selected setup ready; review it, then confirm on Apple Watch.
RunZone complication (Premium start): Add the RunZone complication to a supported Watch face. Tap it to open RunZone, review the setup, and confirm the workout on Watch.
Apple Watch Ultra Action Button (Premium start): Open Settings > Action Button > Workout, choose RunZone and a workout mode, then press the orange Action Button and confirm on Watch. Press it again during an active or paused workout to pause or resume. Apple provides more general setup detail in its Action Button guide.
Siri and Shortcuts (Premium start): Ask Siri to start a workout mode with RunZone, for example:
“Start a Run with RunZone.”
The same App Shortcut is available in Shortcuts as Start Workout, where you can choose Run, Walking, Hiking, Indoor Run, or Mixed Cardio. RunZone opens on Watch and continues through the normal start confirmation flow, using the goals saved for that workout mode.

03Do I need a subscription?
No. RunZone is free to download. Free starts only outdoor Run recorded on iPhone. It includes GPS route recording and a post-run map, Apple Health saving, heart rate when available, time, distance, current and average pace, the three newest readable workouts in History, and a current Workout Readiness summary with the score, classification, and a short explanation when enough Apple Health data is available.
Premium is available monthly or annually. Premium adds Walking and Hiking recorded on iPhone, plus all five workout modes on Apple Watch. It also unlocks workout setup and Guidance; goals; Carried Load; voice and haptic feedback; real-time coaching; full HR zone displays; detailed charts; advanced route analysis and HR-zone route coloring; auto-pause; cooldown recovery; weather; unlimited readable History; and Fitness insights such as Workout Readiness timelines and detailed analysis, Training Status, Body Signals, Activity Trends, and Activity Overview.
Basic route maps and the Share Workout Image, Smoothed GPX, and Original GPX actions are available on Free for readable route-capable workouts. GPX exports require stored route data.
Eligible subscribers may see a 1-week free trial on monthly Premium or a 2-week free trial on annual Premium when the App Store confirms the offer and eligibility. Check the in-app purchase screen for the trial, localized renewal price, and billing period before subscribing.
Link to this answerHow does the tier structure work?
RunZone currently has two active tiers: Free and Premium. Free records outdoor Run on iPhone and keeps the three newest readable workouts available. Premium includes that experience, adds Walking and Hiking on iPhone plus all five Apple Watch workout modes, and unlocks all current paid features.
Premium access is shared with your paired Apple Watch so you can train without your iPhone nearby. If the Watch asks to refresh your subscription, open RunZone on your paired iPhone. Legacy Basic, Advanced, and Pro subscriptions are treated as Premium access.
Link to this answerIs there a family plan or Apple Watch-only plan?
RunZone does not currently offer Family Sharing or a separate family plan.
There is no separate Watch-only tier. The same Premium subscription covers the Apple Watch app and the iPhone and iPad companions for the subscribing Apple ID.

04Where is my workout data stored?
Workouts, routes, heart-rate samples, and related workout data are stored in Apple HealthKit. RunZone also keeps preferences and operational state in protected app storage, and selected settings can sync through Apple services you enable.
RunZone does not operate its own workout database and does not upload your workout values or routes to RunZone-controlled servers. See the privacy policy for the complete storage and processing boundaries.
Link to this answerWhat data does RunZone collect?
RunZone uses TelemetryDeck for optional, privacy-focused product analytics. It sends bounded event names and technical metadata associated with a random app-family identifier.
No health, workout, route, or precise-location values are sent. RunZone does not use advertising identifiers or cross-app tracking, and analytics can be turned off under Settings > Data & Privacy > Analytics. You can read more in our privacy policy.
Link to this answerDoes RunZone sync across my devices?
Workout and health history can synchronize between your Apple devices through Apple Health and Apple-managed iCloud synchronization when you enable Health sync in Apple settings. RunZone reads that information from HealthKit on each device and does not keep an app-owned cloud copy.
Current workout settings and effective heart-rate values sync between a paired iPhone and Apple Watch over WatchConnectivity. A non-health anonymous analytics identifier may use Apple’s iCloud Key-Value Storage between iPhone and iPad. No health, workout, or route data is stored there by RunZone.
